１．Activity record

The first activity November 21-22, 1998

Venue: Miyazaki Medical College Education building (As a part of Medicine exhibition)

Medical education on-site training for a schoolchild (5, sixth grader) was performed.

Theme : Let’s investigate your heart and lung.

It was considered that we would let the schoolchild who participated in the corner understand the role of the heart and a lung using each one's own body.

Specifically,

1）	Investigating where the pulsation of an artery is touched, check the normal value of a pulse rate, and understand a run of an artery, and we also let them know the change by movement or breathing.
2）	Understanding of the sphygmomanometer using the pulsation of a blood vessel. Then, they measure the blood pressure, and check a normal value, and also let them know the change by movement or breathing.
3）	Knowing which place and how many the sound of the heart can be heard using a stethoscope, and let them understand the structure.
4）	Inspecting each one's body with an electrocardiogram mutually, and let them know that the heart is moving using the signal of electricity.
5）	We let schoolchildren become subjects, conduct echocardiography, and let them know the flow of blood. Moreover, let them understand the relation with a lung and the heart as much as possible using the picture created by comics or computer.

About five items of the flow of a pulse, blood pressure, an electrocardiogram, a heartbeat, and blood, each corner was prepared and it considered that a schoolchild can participate from any corner.
A questionnaire is performed to the schoolchild who travelled all corners, and it was made for sweets to hit on their leaving by a lottery.

About this approach, we also talked with the teachers of the neighboring Kibanadai elementary school, and created data.
In the talk of the teachers of science, they have trouble letting schoolchildren understand the relation of a lung and the heart. Moreover, in the lesson of the elementary school, since it was difficult to teach using vision, hearing, or a tactile sense, this plan also obtained the evaluation that it is interesting.
119 children participated.

Second Activity November 23 (Sat.), 1999

The 1st hospital festivals were held in the Miyazaki prefectural Nichinan hospital, and medicine on-site training was performed as the one section.

144 schoolchildren participated .

The third activity November 18-19, 2000

Venue：	Miyazaki Medical College Education building (As a part of Medicine exhibition)
Theme：	Let’s become a doctor! - The medicine classroom for elementary school children-
Purpose：	For mainly elementary school children, let them touch the medical implements in clinical use and hear the live sound of people’s body under the cooperation of the clinical teachers and the nurses. Moreover, conduct an easy experiment and let them get interested. About 180 people participated.

The fourth activity: December 2, 2000

　The 2nd hospital festivals was held in a Miyazaki prefectural Nichinan hospital, and the medicine on-site training was performed as the one section. About 90 people participated.

The fifth activity : November, 2001

Venue：	Miyazaki Medical College Education building (As a part of Medicine exhibition)
Theme：	Theme: Let’s become a doctor! - The medicine classroom for elementary school children-
	About 60 people participated.

The sixth activity : December 6, 2001

The 3rd hospital festivals was held in a Miyazaki prefectural Nichinan hospital, and the medicine on-site training was performed as the one section. About 150 people participated.
We conducted the same contents as the first time from the 1st time to the 6th time.

The seventh activity : May 21 (Sat.), 2006

It was held in Miyazaki Science Museum. This time, Miyazaki ACLS promotion committee and Science Museum jointly hosted.

192 people participated together with parents and children. 99 children participated.
The following is the result of the questionnaires.

29 boys, 28 girls, and 19 parents answered.

The age composition of respondents is,
the　boy's aged 9 and over was 16 persons, the boy's aged 8 and below was 13 persons, the girl's aged 9 and over was 16 persons, and the girl's aged 8 and below was 12 persons.
As for the parents, most of respondents were 40's.

The elementary schools of participants are, Hokita, Kojho, Ohmiya, Nishike, Ehira, Shiomi, Tsunehisa, Hongo, Miyakonojho-higashi, kiyotake, Kawaminami, Sumiyoshi0minami, Higashi-Ohmiya, Ikimedai-nishi, sakuragaoka, Hirose-kita, Aoki-kita, Miyazaki, Aburatsu, Konan, Ikime, Odo, Miyadai-fuzoku. Junior high schools are, Miyadai-fuzoku, Miyazaki, and Akae-higashi.

The result of questionnaires

＜May 21, 2006 at Miyazaki Science Museum＞

１）The items which children got interested most are “Heard the sound of the heart”, “ Saw the own heart by an echocardiography”, and “Massaged heart”.

As for the items of 2) and 3), everybody seemed to understand them.

As for 4) and 5), the three children aged seven and six answered that they did not understand them.

As for 6), everybody understood them, however, two children did not understand 7).

As for 8), all participants except two children wished this project

As for 9) and 10), we listed the comments of participants as follows.

・I would like to create a machine which can see the lung by myself.
It was good for me to experience the cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED. (13 years old, girl)
・When I saw my heart, I though “Oh, my heart sees like this. I learned how to deliver an electric shock. It seemed to be useful. (12 years old, girl).
・I want to see the inside of brain, and what kind of work it carries out. It was good to know about body. From this experience, I want to do something as much as possible to protect people’s life. (11 years old, girl)
・I want to perform artificial respiration and massage the heart again. I want to practically do what I learned today. The explanation was very good, and easy to understand. (11 years old, girl)
・I want to see my years and eyes as well. I am also interested in brain waves. I seldom have chance to join this kind of project, so it was good to come. I learned a lot. I wished this experience would be useful when something happened in the future. And I hope this lesson will be held in a row. Thank you so much. (12 years old, girl).

Parents’ opinions and comments

・Also about work of artificial respiration, a bone, muscles, and the whole body, if there are a model and a picture, I will think that it is intelligible.
I would like to study again about work of the body which a nursery school toddler and a small child also understand.
I got to know the cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED system, it was useful for me.
Thank you for teaching us plainly. (45, 55, 61, 40, 38, 44, 36 and 60 years old)
・I wished to know more how blood is made and carried.I though my child got interested very much by seeing the way that my child was seriously hearing the sound of the own heart, and measuring blood pressure.

・It seemed that my child enjoyed massaging the heart and delivering the electricity. (42 years old)
・It was very easy to understand. Although I think that it is difficult a weekday, I would like you to carry out an elementary school visiting lecture by all means. In a sixth grader's science lesson and an upper classes' health lesson, if a specialist's talk can be observed, I will think that it is truly useful. (38 years old)

The eighth activity November 26 (Sun), 2006

At the eighth Miyazaki prefectural Nichinan Hospital festival

From 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the medicine on-site training was held at the rehabilitation room of this hospital.
There were about 400 participants, the child of the number in it was about 100 persons .

Please look at the scenery at that time.

The classroom was able to be held by 12 nurses who received the course of BLS+AED, four nurses of ICU service, six clinical laboratory technologists (also including the aid from Miyazaki Prefectural Miyazaki Hospital and Miyakonojo), one brain surgeon, one anesthesiologist and one pediatrician, and several persons that supported in the back.

We let children and parents practice the cardiopulmonary resuscitations this time.
The clinical laboratory showed the bacteria cultivated by the culture medium, and showed bacteria by the microscopic examination in order to let them understand the dirt condition of fingers.

46 children answered the questionnaires, 27 girls and 19 boys.

1 person of 6 years old, 8 persons of 7 years old, 4 persons of 8 years old, 8 persons of 9 years old, 13 persons of 10 years old, 5 persons of 11 years old, 3 persons of 12 years old, and 1 person of 13 years old.

According to children’s elementary schools, 17 persons of Aburatsu, 7 persons of Sakuragaoka, 6 persons of Agata, 3 persons of Ushio, 2 persons of Obi, and 1 person od Fukushima, Hirose, Aoki-kita respectively.

1 person of Aburatsu junior high school, and 3 persons of Hashiwabara in Osaka.

Children’s comments

I want to take an X-ray.

I enjoyed the way of Buku-buku.

Various things interested me.

I want to see many kinds of bacillus.

I could have a good memory in Miyazaki.

I want to see the growth of bone till I grow up.

I want to do more various things.

It was interesting and thrilled.

I learned what I did not know.

I learned that there are the carbon dioxide in our body.

I would like to investigate a lot the bacillus etc. which are attached to the place of the hand.

If someone collapses, I want to help the person.

The one of liquid like soap on the palm was interesting, and I want to do again.

I cannot come here often since I live in Osaka, but I could have a good memory this time.

The sound which blood flows was interesting.

It is good that my mother is alive.

It was good to hear the sound of the heart.

I could hear the sound of the my mother’s heart.

I learned that there are four rooms in the heart.

The ninth activity Julu 29 (Sun), 2007

This time, the Miyazaki ACLS spread committee and Science Museum jointly hosted.

276 persons participated together with parents and children. There were 138 children.

The followings are the result of questionnaires.

We received responses from 30 boys, 24 girls and 21 parents.

The age composition of respondents is, the　boy's aged 9 and over was 11 persons, the boy's aged 8 and below was 19 persons, the girl's aged 9 and over was 14 persons, and the girl's aged 8 and below was 10 persons.
As for the parents, most of respondents were from 30’s to 40's. The number of age unknown persons was seven.

The elementary schools of participants are, Miyazaki, Ehira, Agata, Naka, Hirose, Hirose-kita, Nobeoka-minami, Nobeoka, Miyazaki-fuzoku, Mimata-nishi, Otsuka, Kawaminami, Aoki-kita, Une Sakai City mayor of Fukui Prefecture, and Tamagawa of Kanagawa prefecture.

They are 3 persons of aged 6 years old, 1 person of aged 7, 1 person of aged 8, three person of aged 9, three persons of aged 10, and 1 person of aged 15.
６）	8 children replied Yes for the Q6, “When the heart stops and nothing is done, does the heart move again?” They are 3 person of aged 6, 2 persons of aged 7, 1 person of aged 8, and 2 persons of aged 10.
７）	9 children replied Yes for Q.7,” Is there a zombie in whom the dead human being is revived?” They are 2 persons of aged 7, 1 person of aged 8, 4 persons of aged 10, and 2 persons of aged 11.

This time, the child who cannot understand was increasing about three points mentioned above compared with the ordinary year。We think it is the result that we did not explain them carefully. From now on, we will try hard.

	I enjoyed it very much. Massage of heart is great. I was surprised by various things Interesting. I feel scared if my heart stops. It was good to be able to see the bacteria attached to the hand I learned a lot about the body. Surprised. This was the second time, but I enjoyed it. I would like to help people if they collapse. I got to know very well about the body. I enjoyed that I measured the blood pressure. It was interesting to know the motion of the heart and the flow of the blood. I was happy that I could massage of the heart. The bacteria was not able to be taken when it was a usual way of washing hands. I realized that there is the bacteria even though it is not seen. I got to know that even children can massage the heart.

The seminar for not causing an articular disorder in a growth phase

was held at Miyazaki prefecture Aoshima juvenile children’s center.

The participants are 52 pitchers of 2nd grade and 3 of 1st grade from 25 junior high schools in Miyazaki city.

Leaders were about ten and some of guardians and teachers.

The staff was five orthopedists, one anesthesiologist, four physiotherapists, and four trainees.One person from Miyazaki city Amateur sport association, and 2 persons from the city association of rubber- ball baseball participated.

The training of cardiopulmonary resuscitation was practiced simply by Naoto Nagata, the department of anesthesia of prefectural Nichinan hospital, and members of Miyazaki fire department under the title of the easy explanation and training of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED.

We felt that we could not let children know how important the stretch is since there were very few participants in leaders

We thought that it was necessary to consider the plan in which leaders can participate, wondering why it will happen.

From now on, we should make lectures shorter and perform training by extracting the point.

December 2 (Sun), 2007

At the ninth prefectural Nichinan hospital festival, the tenth medical on-site training was held.

Children-oriented AED+BLS and exercise for low back pain for grown up were also performed simultaneously.

Compared with the ordinary year, there were very few participants and it may be due to the events of elementary schools.

July 27 (Sun), 2008

The third medical on-site training wqs held at the Science Musuem.

Miyazaki ACLS promotion committee and Science Museum jointly hosted
like last year.

There were 365 participants including little children.
This time, in the theme of food education , three nutritionists who work at prefectural Nichinan hospital cooperated.　

The contents of the questionnaires of "a meal is important for the body" and “Washing hands protects yourself from bacteria.” were added to the same questions as last time.
The respondents of the questionnaires were 8 junior high school students, 6 boys and 2 girls.

There were 56 elementary school students from 7 years old to 12 were 56, 29 boys and 27 girls.
There were 30 kindergarten children, 13 boys and 17 girls.

As for parents, there were 14 in 40’s, 5 male and 9 females.
There were 13 in 30’s, 5 males and 8 females.2 females in 20’s.
The followings are the results.

The persons who understood for “Washing hands protects yourself from the bacteria” were 4 junior high school students, 31 elementary school students, and 12 kindergarten children.

The persons who understood for “A meal is important for your body” were 4 junior high school students, 27 elementary school students, and 10 kindergarten children.

It seems that 50% of all age groups understood this main point although they were multiple answers.
In the section of food education, there is paper showing various dishes and children choose them.

Nutritionists checked the selected paper with the calorie and nutritional balance which was displayed on the conically shaped pipe, and they commented.
Children seemed to have shown interests in it very much.

In the corner of “Washing hands protects yourself from the bacteria, The jelly-like paint reacted to ultraviolet rays was applied to fingers, and after washing hands, they checked how much the paint would remain in fingers by irradiating ultraviolet rays .

Moreover, we showed that many lactic acid bacteria were in a lactic acid drink by the expansion microscope .

Most participants replied "NO" this time to the question whether a zombie exists.
We felt relived.

All participants replied that they would like to join again.

July 26 (Sun), 2009

The fourth medical on-site training was held at Science museum.

The organizer was Science museum this time, and Miyazaki ICLS promotion committee and volunteers of our prefectural Nichinan hospital cooperated.

There were 365 participants including a little children.

We received 53 respondents for our questionnaires. For the question “Is there zombie in whom
the dead person is revived?, 8 children replied “Yes”. Among them, 4 children were aged 10 and over.

Nobody replied “Yes “for the same question last time. From now on, we would like to convey how important we are alive.

□We let them study about washing hands in the rain.

□This is the food education section.

□This is the section of AED and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. From the fourth grade of elementary school would be able to master the way.

□ This is the section of blood pressure and auscultation. It seemed that they were interested in the sound of heart.
